The upcoming film Leprechaun: Origins is directed by Zach Lipovsky in his feature film directorial debut. Lipovsky has previously helmed a series of made-for-TV movies. The script is penned by newcomer Harris Wilkinson. Wilkinson’s background is in television advertising. This marks the first theatrical run of any kind for a Leprechaun film since 1994. The last four installments in the series have been direct-to-video.
The film stars Stephanie Bennett (Grave Encounters 2), Andrew Dunbar (Alien Trespass), and Dylan ‘Hornswoggle’ Postl in the titular role. Leprechaun: Origins is Postl’s first foray out of the wrestling world and into the feature film arena.
The plot of Leprechaun: Origins centers around two young couples backpacking through Europe. The group stops at a cabin in the woods and soon encounters the titular character. Thus begins a fight for their lives.
All reports up to this point suggest that this will be a darker and scarier incarnation of the Leprechaun mythology. It is a franchise reboot that will simultaneously provide a certain amount of backstory on the titular character. Don’t expect this remake to parallel the original franchise too closely. Director Zach Lipovsky told Crave Online that he wasn’t trying to imitate the original and that he is fairly new to the Leprechaun mythology. His goal was to create something original that moves out of the comedy realm and scares viewers.
The film will receive a limited theatrical engagement with a simultaneous VOD exhibition on August 26, 2014. It will hit home video on September 30th, 2014.
