Directed by David Jung, The Possession of Michael King explores the paranormal with devastating consequences.

Michael King (Shane Johnson) is a family man with a beautiful wife and young daughter who counts his blessings for his life. Following the sudden death of his wife, the documentary filmmaker decides to make his next film about the existence of the supernatural. Outfitting himself with a variety of cameras and enlisting the services of a friend as an extra cameraman. He seeks out practitioners of the occult, including demonologists and mediums, and invites them to perform their darkest magic on him.

Wishing to debunk demonic possibility Michael intends to show that nothing bad will happen to him. He doesn’t believe in God or the Devil and he’s hoping that he’ll prove that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than a myth. Inevitably, after drinking enough hallucinogenic elixirs and visiting enough demonic delving dungeons, Michael starts to lose his grip on his sanity and an evil and horrifying force begins to take over him.

As Michael becomes possessed and sinks deeper into his own hell this dark force makes him increasingly unhinged and a danger to himself and those around him, especially his young daughter (Ella Anderson) and Sister Beth (Julie McNiven).

The quality of the acting of the film was believable and the found-footage aspect is a profusion of shots that take place from every conceivable viewpoint. It takes the form of a professionally shot documentary, with security-camera like shots and POVs filling in the gaps.

The Possession of Michael King deals with loss, misinterpret chance, misfortune, and everyday evil. It is not your usual found footage horror. It has something to say and wants you to hear it. Unfortunately I don’t think it was told to its full potential, but I wasn’t necessarily disappointed and I would recommend it to fans of the genre.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled is convincing the world he didn’t exist. The Possession of Michael King explores the consequences of calling his bluff.
