4K Ultra Blu-Ray Review: Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Terminator 2 - Terminator Genisys - Terminator: Genisys

Terminator 2 requires no introduction. It is one of the greatest sci-fi/action films of all time.  It is full of memorable dialogue; it offers up heartfelt performances; and it’s full of mind-blowing effects that still look good more than a quarter of a century later. With that said, I will focus the majority of this critique on the bonus content included with the film’s latest release.

A 4K up-conversion of the film has restored it to even better than its original glory. All three versions of the feature film are presented on both Blu-Ray disc and 4K Ultra. All of the special features are included on each of the discs, as well.

The most noteworthy of the bonus content is a never before seen 55-minute retrospective documentary on the film’s creation that looks back on the impact of the picture after 26-years. The highlight of the doc for me was the inclusion of various storyboards that showed the genesis of some of the most noteworthy effects sequences (all involving the T-1000, of course). It was really interesting to see how similar the effects we see in the film were to the storyboards from preproduction. It was also fascinating to hear how close the film came to missing its release deadline and how much creative input Robert Patrick had over his character.

In addition to the inclusion of the brand new documentary, there is also a 30-minute making of featurette, deleted scenes with audio commentary, and several different trailers (including the latest incarnation for the recent 3D rerelease of the film).

While a lot of the bonus content is ported over from previous releases, the ability to watch three different versions of the film, the inclusion of a brand new documentary, and the crystal clear 4K picture and sound make this a sound investment for diehard fans of the Terminator franchise. The 4K version of the film is now available everywhere.
