Exorcismus- Devil Delving

The movie exorcismus directed by Manuel Carballo.

Directed by Spanish director Manuel Carballo and written by David Munoz, Exorcismus is a good effort at the possession genre, which I personally enjoyed.

Exorcismus starts with telling the story of angry teen Emma Evans (Sophie Vavasseur- Resident Evil: Apocalypse), whose family suspects she needs mental help for her recurring fits and distant behavior at times. Emma’s parents ignore all possibilities that it could be anything demonic until an inexplicable levitation opens their minds to engage the services of Emma’s uncle Christopher (Stephen Billington).

Christopher just so happens to be a priest, one in which was investigated in the past for having a young girl die while he was performing an exorcism on her. Christopher garnered a lot of unwanted press for his church so he has to perform the rituals without them finding out. Unbeknownst to Emma and her parents, Christopher has ulterior motives in wanting to help his niece and he is willing to pay any price to get what he needs.

We learn through the course of the film that Emma dabbled with an ouija board in an effort to awaken and tempt the devil. Which indeed she does. As things grow increasingly worse and the Evans family begins to disintegrate at the seams, it soon becomes apparent that even an exorcism might not be able to stop a blossoming evil intent on wreaking as much havoc as demonically possible.

Lead Sophie Vavasseur did a good job in her role, especially in the demanding scenes where she must switch personalities between teen Emma and possessive spirit. There’s not many that can pull that off convincingly.

Spanish director Manuel Carballo gave us a good attempt at an entertaining possession story, that while being well made, just fell short of the awesome mark and failed to capitalize on the potential offered by a different twist on the possession story.

Exorcismus features decent enough actors, solid CGI and some thrilling scenes. If possession movies are your thing I’d definitely say check it out.
