Exclusive Interview with Sean Tiedeman on 30 Years of Garbage

A new IndieGoGo Project that has been getting a lot of buzz over the past few days is the 30 Years of Garbage documentary. As a general rule, we don’t cover Kickstarter or IndieGoGo campaigns because there is a high probability that they will not get funded and there are so many of them that it wouldn’t be proper to only spotlight a handful. But this is a different story. The film is already in production and director Sean Tiedeman has already exceeded his IndieGoGo goal, so the film will be made. You can still donate to the campaign if you so desire. There are some pretty cool prizes being offered!

A lot of fans have been asking if the doc will touch on the awesomely bad 1987 Garbage Pail Kids feature film, so we reached out to director Sean Tiedeman and asked. He was able to shed some light and also elaborated on his thoughts about crowd funding and how he got in to the documentary scene.

Tiedeman assures us that his documentary will in fact cover the feature film: “Yes! We will definitely be discussing the ‘awesomely bad’ Garbage Pail Kids film in our doc,” said Tiedeman. “I hope to get some interviews with some of the crew and cast involved with the movie.”

Tiedeman explained to us that the production is well under way but that he still has a ways to go before completion. “30 Years of Garbage is not entirely shot yet,” Tiedeman declared. “We did all we could out of pocket – shooting in the New York area where we are located. The crowdfunding campaign is in play to allow the production to finish what’s already been started. A lot of our funding is needed to travel around the country with our crew to film our remaining interviews. The film will be done mid next year. It has to be done by then as the 30th anniversary falls in 2015! I can’t believe they are that old or that I am that old.” [Laughs]

Tiedeman divulged to Wicked Horror that he has long been a horror fan and has been involved with horror docs for some time. He also let us know that 30 Years of Garbage is not the only thing he is working on at the moment. “I’m currently editing a promo video for Angus Scrimm (Phantasm) that will be shown at the NYC Horror Fest this month where Scrimm will be receiving the lifetime achievement award. I got involved in docs back in the day while shooting interviews with Romero and Stephen King for Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments,” said Tiedeman.

When it comes to the distribution process, the director is keeping his options open. He’s confident that the film will find distribtuion but doesn’t want to be too hasty in accepting the first offer that comes his way. On the subject, he told us the following: “I have had some contact with distributors expressing interest but am really waiting until we have a finished film. My goal is to get 30 Years of Garbage out there as much as I can.”

As for his thoughts on crowd funding, Tiedeman has had a very positive experience. “My last doc on the 80s arcade culture scene The King of Arcades is currently out and the digital download is available via Gog.Com,” explained the director. “It has surprisingly been played in a few theaters. I raised the money for that film a while back on Kickstarter. It was an awesome experience. Crowd-funding is a great way to get funding to make films that normally would never see the light of day. If there are enough fans for a particular subject or concept, it can now be done all independently. Pretty cool in my book.”
