They’re kooky, ooky, spooky, and…they’re back! Well, in animated form at least. Everyone’s favorite weirdo family, the inimitable Addamses, return to theaters (and our hearts) this coming October in a brand-new story. The first teaser trailer promises plenty of the oddball fun we’ve come to expect from the first family of horror, with less of the constraints of the live action world.
Precious little is known about the premise of the film, but this first trailer suggests it’ll be something of a prequel as The Addams Family get settled into their iconic, and super goth, mansion. This is their very first theatrical animated outing, and the press release promises to keep that familiar Addams spirit intact, noting, “Funny, outlandish, and completely iconic, The Addams Family redefines what it means to be a good neighbor.”
The upcoming movie boasts a stellar voice cast, including Charlize Theron as Morticia, Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester and the legendary Bette Midler as Grandma. The Addams Family is directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan (Sausage Party) from a script credited to Matt Lieberman (The Christmas Chronicles) and Pamela Pettler (Monster House).
Much has been made of Isaac’s less sexy look in the trailer, but the original New Yorker cartoon depicts Gomez as a rounder gentleman meaning this iteration is actually closer to his original look than the iconic Raul Giulia portrayal (from the two beloved mid-nineties live action movies). The teaser itself is fun and suitably spooky, the voice cast nicely matched up with the exception of Wolfhard who seems to just be doing his regular thing rather than a spooky Pugsley cadence.
It remains to be seen how this latest film will match up, but thus far it looks like a safe enough bet. Check out the teaser below.
