The good news is that Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel is still happening. The bad news is that it may have to take a back seat to Prometheus 2. According to an inside source of Bloody Disgusting, producer Ridley Scott wants to see his Prometheus 2 put into production before time and resources are allocated to Blomkamp’s currently untitled Alien sequel.
The source told the outlet the following: “Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea. Blomkamp continues to work on the script and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.”
BD’s source also suggests that the delay will not be such a bad thing. In their estimation, it will allow Blomkamp more time and freedom to conceptualize the project and as such may prove beneficial to the production. It’s also being speculated that the altered start date may alleviate any potential scheduling conflicts due to Sigourney Weaver’s commitment to James Cameron’s Avatar sequels.
It was previously expected that the film would see a 2017 release but with the delays caused by this latest announcement will likely see the film hitting multiplexes some time in 2018.
