Plans to remake Phantasm date back as far as 2005. New Line was attempting to reboot the property for modern audiences but after a lot of false starts, it began to appear that the project was going nowhere fast. Today, Arrow in the Head got an update on the status of the redux from franchise creator Don Coscarelli. Head past the break to hear what he had to say.
Anyone actually hoping for a reboot of the series (read no one) will likely be disappointed by what Coscarelli had to say. But those of us not anxiously awaiting a redux (read everyone) will probably be pleasantly surprised to learn that there are no immediate plans to remake one of the greatest and most underrated horror films of all time.
“Nothing is ever off the table,” said Coscarelli. “You have a big casting hurdle there with Tall Man. Currently there’s nothing planned, but if you had the right director, the right story, the right direction in terms of making something unique and still staying true to the spirit of the story. You know, all these years working on Phantasm, I’m like a Phantasm fan too, so I would go see it!”
As for Phantasm: Ravager, Anchor Bay appears to be in a holding pattern with that. A teaser hit the net a while back after the project seemingly materialized out of thin air and then…Nothing. When the subject came up at Kentucky’s ScareFest, Coscarelli revealed that the project will likely be poised for release some time in 2016 if everything works out as expected.
Phantasm sees a young boy, his brother, and their ice cream vendor friend taking on an unusually tall man intent upon ravaging cities to steal their dead and turn them into pint-sized slave laborers in an alternate dimension.
