I had resigned myself to believing that Evil Dead 4 or Army of Darkness 2 (as Sam Raimi was calling it a few years back) was probably never going to happen. That is until last weekend at Comic-Con when longtime Evil Dead franchise executive producer Rob Tapert teased the possibility of a fourth film in the original franchise. i09 reports that during a panel, Tapert explained “Nothing’s off the table. We’re thinking about what that could be, and who that would please. Sam [Raimi] talked for many years, teasing the world that we were going to make Evil Dead 4. And that kind of turned into a TV series. Now Bruce [Campbell] and I are going, ‘Well, there’s a possibility of a movie here.’”
Tapert also revealed that the events of Army of Darkness will be a part of the storyline in season two. Previously, Tapert and Raimi had been fairly noncommittal in regards to whether or not the series would exist in the same universe as Army of Darkness. But the cat is now officially out of the bag. ““So, Army of Darkness is owned by MGM, and we just never had a chance to properly reference it in the first season,” Tapert explained. “This season, we do bring up Ash’s events in Army of Darkness, and reference it. It was more that there wasn’t a place for it in our storytelling that we needed to talk about that. If he started blabbing to these shop clerks about, ‘Yeah, I went back to the Middle Ages and did all these things,’ [it would just be exposition]. But that is in his memory bank, and he’s going to pull it out at the appropriate time.”
In the original The Evil Dead, Ash, his girlfriend, and a couple of their buddies trek to a cabin in the woods for a break from the pressures of school, studying, and day-to-day life. Shortly after the friends arrive at their destination, they discover The Book of the Dead and tape recordings of incantations from the book. Against their better judgment, they listen to the spells and unleash an ages old evil that rises from the woods and attempts to take possession of each and every one of their souls.
Rest assured that as soon as we learn more about the possibility of another Evil Dead film, we will keep you in the loop. That’s all we know for now!
