Back in June, we brought you the exciting news that The Conjuring 2‘s creepiest component, the demon nun, was to be gifted her very own spinoff simply entitled The Nun.
The Conjuring 2 has just hit DVD and BD, so what better time to unleash its breakout star on a crowd of unsuspecting fans?
In the video below, you can see how the demon nun was employed as a pretty genius scare prank on a load of oblivious patrons.
Suffice to say, we’re pretty glad we weren’t there to check this out in person.
Director James Wan and Peter Safran are reuniting to produce The Nun, with David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote The Conjuring 2, set to tackle the script.
What’s most interesting about the news of a spinoff is that, allegedly, the character was only added in re-shoots. This means that, arguably, the strongest component of the movie didn’t even exist until a few months before it opened.
Actress Bonnie Aarons, under heavy makeup, portrayed the character on-screen but there is no word yet on whether she will return in this new movie.
The Nun will be the second spinoff from the Conjuring series, following 2014’s Annabelle, which was a major worldwide hit, grossing over $256 million. The movie proved so popular that New Line have already slated a sequel to it for next year.
The demon nun has proven to be a breakout star for The Conjuring 2, (check out the Wicked Horror verdict right here), which was a massive deal in its own right when it opened earlier this year.
Not only was it the No. 1 film in North America, but also No. 1 internationally on opening weekend, outside of China.
It was also the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in 30 markets including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America and most markets in Asia. The movie grossed over $100 million worldwide in five days of release. So, naturally, a spinoff for its most talked-about character makes sense.
