From the director of The Blair Witch Project, Lovely Molly and segment “A Ride in the Park” from V/H/S 2, Eduardo Sanchez brings us Altered, a movie about aliens and issues.
Sometimes, just sometimes, strange, scary, or surreal things happen to us when we are younger, and we grow up having never talked about it. We keep it inside and let it eat away at us and scar us inside, silently.
Fifteen years ago a group of high school friends were abducted by aliens and altered. One of them died from the alterations attack and the rest of the gang Cody (Paul McCarthy-Boyington), Duke (Brad William Henke), Otis (Michael C. Williams) and Wyatt (Adam Kaufman), seek revenge for the irreversible effects they have been dealing with for all these years. They have been hunting a mysterious race of alien hominids which dwell in the shadows outside civilization since the abduction, and one night finally get what they have been searching for.
After managing to capture an alien and bring it back to Wyatts, the hillbilly crew now has to try and survive the night. They are unsure of what to do with it and fend off the little sharp toothed wonders, while simultaneously sidestepping the triple inconveniences of mind control, decomposition and death.
Altered is a nice low budget science fiction film and Eduardo did a good job with it. With the budget they had they used it effectively, considering there is no CGI. The effects are all practical and the alien looks pretty decent too.
Overall, Altered is a cool sci-fi-horror. It has decent characters, for the most part, interesting effects, and some good action in parts. If you are a fan of aliens and the unknown I would say give Altered a go.
