disturbing and shocking movie of recent horror cinema, A Serbian film.

A Serbian Film is easily one of, if not the most, disturbing films of all time.

Directed by Srdjan Spasojevic, A Serbian Film is definitely not a film for those easily shocked or offended, so consider yourself forewarned. Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t partially startled or upset myself by any of the scenes in this film, though I can definitely acknowledge that some of the scenes ARE shocking and awful and disgusting. But set aside from all that, I feel the film has a lot more to say than some other gross films (such as Human Centipede the sequel). This gets lost on most people due to taking offense at these scenes and dismissing the film as repulsive trash.

Milo, an ex-adult star who is struggling to make ends meet, as many families do, gets offered a job by Vukmir, a crazy film director who has some elaborate plans that could help lift these money worries off Milo’s shoulders. Of course, easy money usually has a catch to it.

The film takes it’s time showcasing some of the characters within it, but in time you realize everyone has their own agenda.

Without giving much away, the material is pretty extreme, but contrary to what I’ve heard I don’t feel it’s exploitative. Every single unspeakable thing that happens in this movie has happened time and time again throughout human history. This film just dares you to recognize it, rather than brush it under the carpet.  Overall this is a very well made movie. The effects are unbelievably real and the acting is solid to the end.

A Serbian Film is definitely one of the most disturbing films I’ve seen in terms of content. My psyche doesn’t regret watching it for one second, I’ve even watched it a few times.

If you haven’t seen A Serbian Film and you have the stomach to watch something sickening, do it. Its shock cinema at its best, or worst, whichever way you look at it. Srdjan Spasojevic fits in as much depravity as possible with no boundaries, going places many movie makers would not dare. As usual, go for the uncut version. In fact, the NC-17 version in the US had to cut out a record 19 minutes just to make NC-17. Now that should prepare you for what’s in store.
