March 2022 Missing Person of the Month: John Clyde Perrin

John Clyde Parren

There are few details readily available in the case of John Clyde Perrin. Born in Bristol, Tennessee, John was the second son of Robert Pain Perrin and Mary Alice Schullenberger and a recent graduate of law school at Stanford University as of 1970. John Perrin was last seen on June 23rd, 1970, in Menlo Park, California. There is nothing online that outlines what June 23rd looked like for John or the circumstances surrounding someone–presumably his parents–reporting him missing. One significant event that had been going on in John’s life around this time of his disappearance was a recent conviction. John had been a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. At some point during 1970, John was charged with refusing induction into the armed services and his conviction was under appeal at the time of his disappearance; it was upheld a few weeks after he was last seen. He has never been heard from since.

The following morning, June 24th, approximately 26 miles away in the San Francisco Bay, a man matching the general description of John was rescued from the shallow estuary and was taken to a nearby hospital. It is not documented if the man–who said his name was “David Herrin”–had any injuries. He was given clean clothing, left the hospital and disappeared. The identity of “David Herrin” has never been confirmed, but Perrin’s family believes it was John; though their reasoning has not been made public.

John Clyde Perrin – The Charley Project

John Perrin was 25 years old at the time of his disappearance. He stood at 5’11” and weighed between 155 to 180 pounds. He has sandy blonde hair and brown eyes. He has extensive scarring on one of his heels from a motorcycle wheel. He may go by his nickname Johnny. Both of John’s parents are now deceased, but his siblings are still alive and looking for him. If he resurfaces, he would be 77 years old. He would no longer be facing any charges for avoiding military service.

If you have any information on the disappearance of John Perrin, you are encouraged to contact the Menlo Park Police Department (650-330-6317). His agency case number is 16-993. His NamUs case number is 31586.
