In a statment to Showbiz Spy, Tim Burton revealed that Beetlejuice 2 is really happening, at long last. The director confirmed that the project had been greenlit at Warner Brothers and seems to suggest that it may be going into production soon.
“The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael,” confirmed Burton. “We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”
Burton was extremely tight lipped about any additional details but it sounds like we should know more soon.
Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith previously confirmed that he is penning a proper sequel, as opposed to a reboot. Grahame-Smith also noted that he plans to take a similar approach to the first film where the titular character didn’t appear until roughly halfway though the feature.
This is a follow up effort that has suffered through development hell for years but it seems as though things are finally coming together.
The original film sees a pair of recently deceased ghosts trying to exorcise the new (living) inhabitants of their home by enlisting the services of a bio-exorcist.
Update: A rep for Burton told EW that the quotes that were attributed to him were fabricated and that the film is not yet headed into production.
