Fans of The Conjuring 2‘s creepiest component rejoice as The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the standout demon – an evil nun – is getting her very own spinoff movie. Director James Wan and Peter Safran are reuniting to produce the flick, with David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote The Conjuring 2, set to tackle the script.
The flick is entitled The Nun. There’s no word yet on whether she’ll be represented as the same black liquourice mouth, Marilyn Manson incarnation again, but we live in hope.
What’s most interesting about this news is that, allegedly, the character was only added in reshoots. This means that, arguably, the strongest component of the movie even exist until a few months before it opened.
THR reports that the demon originally had horns but, at the last minute, Wan came up with a brand-new concept that, if fan response is anything to go by, may have just been the magic ingredient.
Actress Bonnie Aarons, under heavy makeup, portrayed the character on-screen but there is no word yet on whether she will return in this new movie.
The Nun will be the second spinoff from the Conjuring series, following 2014’s Annabelle, which was a major worldwide hit, grossing over $256 million. The movie proved so popular that New Line have already slated a sequel to it for next year.
The demon nun has proven to be a breakout star for The Conjuring 2, which is already doing huge business (check out the Wicked Horror verdict right here). It was not only the No. 1 film in North America, but also No. 1 internationally on opening weekend, outside of China.
It was also the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in 30 markets including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America and most markets in Asia. The movie grossed over $100 million worldwide in five days of release. So, naturally, a spinoff for its most talked-about character makes sense. We’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.
