Drafthouse Acquires North American Rights to World of Kanako

World of Kanako

The blood-soaked Japanese thriller World of Kanako has been acquired for North American distribution by Drafthouse Films. The picture is directed by Tetsuya Nakashima (Kamikaze GirlsConfessions). It has already enjoyed a successful run at the Japanese box office and will now grace select North American theaters in concert with a VOD release later this year.

The film made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and is based on the 2005 novel by Akio Fukamachi.

Drafthouse Films COO James Emanuel Shapiro said the following of the organization’s acquisition of the film: “This movie is an all out depraved and constant assault on your morality and your senses and I loved every second of it. It’s perverse. It’s kinetic. It’s incredible.”

The director offered this about the partnership: “I’m really thrilled to have the film distributed by Drafthouse Films. [I] cannot wait to hear the reaction to the film in North America.”

“In The World Of Kanako, broken ex-detective Akikazu (Kôji Yakusho of 13 Assassins) searches for his missing teenage daughter (newcomer Nana Komatsu), only to discover that she may not be the person who he once thought she was, leaving a shocking trail of drugs, sex and violence.”
