Before you die you see the ring. The infamous line from The Ring movies.

We have learned that Rings, the next installment in the Ring franchise will be a prequel to the 2002 remake that starred Naomi Watts. Bloody Disgusting discovered that the next installment in the series, which was previously being called The Ring 3D, will explain what happened leading up to the events depicted in Ringu and its US remake, The Ring. The film will explain the origin of the haunted VHS tape that took center stage in the original film and it will touch on Samara’s origins as well. The film is slated to hit theaters November 13, 2015.

Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacob Aaron Estes co-penned the script, which is based on a novel by Koji Suzuki. F. Javier Gutiérrez will be assuming directorial duties on the project. Not a lot else is known about the upcoming prequel at this point in time. But stay tuned to the site in the coming months for updates on this project as they are announced.

The 2002 feature film, The Ring tells the story of a haunted VHS cassette that causes anyone that watches it to die seven days later. The tape is associated with the ghosts of a young girl named Samara who appears to have died an untimely and violent death.
