After previously announcing that What We Do in the Shadows would be released on a rolling basis to different US cities, we have now learned that the picture has launched a Kickstarter campaign to broaden the scope of its release. The film is seeking $400,000 in funds to shoulder the cost of a US theatrical exhibition and as of this posting 28 days remain in the campaign.
The film will be theatrically released in New York and Los Angeles beginning February 13. That is expected to be succeeded by an expansion into other markets, including San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. a week later on February 20. Then we will begin to see a national rollout strategy which will see new cities being added to the roster weekly. The funds from Kickstarter will allow more cities to be reached.
What We Do in the Shadows was recently acquired via a three way partnership between The Orchard, Unison Films, and Funny or Die. It was always the plan for the trio to collaborate on a multi platform release but it’s a pleasant surprise to see the film potentially getting a larger scale release than initially expected.
The film is written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi who previously collaborated on the HBO series Flight of the Conchords. Waititi and Clement both have starring roles in the film as well.
The mockumentary follows three vampires who live together as roommates. The picture chronicles their day-to-day struggles as they cope with everyday problems, like paying rent or quarreling over household chores, as well as tackling more unique issues like where to find human blood.
