Frank Khalfoun, the director of the 2012 Maniac remake is working on another project with ties to an established film. This time, the director is in postproduction on the film Amityville which is scheduled for a January 2, 2015 release. His cast will be comprised of Bella Thorne (Home Invasion), Cameron Monaghan (Vampire Academy), and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hitcher). It was originally reported that Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands would pen the script and direct the film but as of this posting, it is Khalfoun that is reportedly pulling double duty as the film’s writer and director.
This installment will serve as a sequel, rather than a remake, and the events that take place within will have no ties to the original film other than the house and its backstory. The storyline of this sequel will reportedly follow an investigative news intern who compiles an expert team of Priests, Demonologists, and fellow journalists in an attempt to solve the mystery behind the Amityville house.
I would normally be very skeptical of another Amityville sequel but with Blumhouse producing and Frank Khalfoun directing, I am cautiously optimistic that this sequel may break the cycle of terrible sequels in the Amityville franchise. I have yet to see a Blumhouse film I haven’t liked and I am a fan of Khalfoun’s remake of Maniac. So, hopefully, this installment will be a change of pace for the Amityville series.
