Insidious: Chapter 3 will mark the departure of James Wan from the Insidious franchise. Wan’s longtime collaborator Leigh Whannell will pen the script for this third installment and has also been tapped to direct the entry. While it was once rumored that Wan would be back to helm a fourth chapter, Blumhouse studio head Jason Blum has put that rumor to rest. Insidious: Chapter 3 is currently slated for a May 29, 2015 release.
Insidious: Chapter 3 will also see the departure of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins as the Lambert family. The upcoming third installment will introduce a new cast of a new cast of characters, including Dermot Mulroney (Stoker) and Stefanie Scott (Jem and the Holograms). Lin Shaye will be staying on as paranormal investigator Elise.
Insidious: Chapter 3 will be Leigh Whannell’s first time directing a feature. It will be interesting to see how much of Wan’s aesthetic has rubbed off on him throughout their 10+ year long history together. Considering that Whannell co-wrote the previous two installments, we aren’t expecting too great a departure from what worked in the first and second films.
As for plot details, none have been released at this point. Our best guess is that Mulroney and Scott will be playing a father and daughter with one of them suffering a paranormal episode. Insidious: Chapter 3 is currently in production but everything is being kept closely under wraps. We will keep you apprised as new details become available closer to the film’s 2015 release.
