Opinions on Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost are going to be VERY mixed
Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost begins with the sounds of a woman panting. Either she’s slowly choking to death or else she’s experiencing a low-key orgasm — which is a pretty good summation of what this movie feels like in the abstract.
It’s a film that never really decides what it wants to be. It has elements of horror, comedy, romantic melodrama and absurdist period piece, but it never picks a path and becomes something concrete. It feels like three or four different movies edited together at the same time and the end result is pretty disorienting — and maybe not in a good way.
Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost is a pretty interesting movie, even if it doesn’t always work as, well, whatever it’s supposed to be. It has two strong leads and the pacing is pretty good — although its narrative structure, which flashes forward and backwards constantly, isn’t the most intuitive way to make a coherent movie.
Is it a movie about a frayed romance or one about a paranormal hoax or one about people trying to make amends after an act of senseless violence or is it literally about nothing? These are the questions viewers of Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost are tasked with answering. Whatever solution you go with, though, you’re probably going to be disappointed by the totality of the movie, especially considering its lethargic anti-ending. If you like fast paced, high body count horror, this movie is definitely NOT for you.
So what is this not quite horror movie about, exactly? Well, it’s essentially about two characters — played by Abigail Sims and Everardo Barriga — who have a very difficult to explain relationship. Maybe they’re besties, maybe they’re secretly in love with one another, maybe they’re each others beards … it’s never really fleshed out for the audience. What we do know, though, is that they like to play pranks on everybody else in their high school theater department. By the way, this is another one of those movies were we have people pressing 30 playing 16 and 17 year old characters. Just like in the ‘80s.
I struggle to summarize the plot not because its laden with spoilers, but because frankly not a whole lot happens over the course of the film. It’s a very dialogue-heavy movie, which wouldn’t be a problem if the characters had a lot of interesting things to say. Unfortunately, the verbal exchanges are fairly forgettable, although we do get one or two pretty good “jump scare” moments that aren’t really meant to be jump scares. I know, it sounds confusing, but when you watch it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Or maybe you won’t, who knows?
There are a lot of issues with Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost, but I think the biggest flaw is that it’s just too damn long for its own good. At nearly two hours long, there are long stretches where the movie just kind of fumbles around aimlessly, testing the patience of anybody watching it. All I can say is that if you’re going to check this one out, it may not be a bad idea to hit the 1.25x speed button — or maybe even the 2X speed, if you’re really pressed for free time.
It’s not that Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost is a “bad” movie, per se. It’s just that it’s structured in a way that’s probably not going to please fans of any specific genre. As a horror film it’s totally lacking, but it doesn’t necessarily work as a comedy or a coming-of-age drama, either. The characters are likable enough, I suppose, but they lack depth and don’t really evolve as the movie drags along at a sleepy snail’s pace. Which is a shame, because this movie does have a lot of things going for it, including some downright excellent cinematography and a fairly unique (and effective) soundtrack.
You want to give the filmmakers some credit for making their kind of movie, even if it is nearly impossible to market (indeed, the official movie poster is so ambiguous, it could conceivably be about anything.) That said, with so many options out there in the all-digital, all-streaming utopia we live in today, it’s hard to think of any singular reason why a.) this movie stands out from everything else and b.) why it’s worth going out of your way to check out. There’s a lot of talent involved in this movie, both behind and in front of the camera, but they overall product is just kinda there and not much else. Not everybody is going to be disappointed by the film, but I get the feeling a lot of viewers will be — especially if you’re expecting any kind of supernatural hokum at all.
We all know that saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, Tomorrow, You Pretty Ghost is one of the most hyper-literal examples of that axiom I’ve encountered in a long time. All I can say is that if you’re expecting actual ghosts to show up in this movie, you might as well get ready to count up all of the citrus fruits that make an appearance in A Clockwork Orange.
