New on Netflix: January 29th, 2021

Netflix

It’s Friday and you know what that means; time to dig out and live your favorite pair of shabby sweatpants. Welcome back to New on Netflix, your weekly update on the spooky films and TV shows added to Netflix’s library. The streaming giant’s horror department has always been a mixed bag. However, I’d say they’ve really stepped up their game in the last couple of years with the release of amazing, essential watches. We’ve been treated to must see original programming like The Haunting of Hill House, Velvet Buzzsaw, Hush, and some of the classics we all know and love.

This week our list features a paranoid U.S. Marshal, a haunted foster home, a deadly New Year’s Eve party and a genius counterfeiter.

Shutter Island

In 1954, U.S. Marshals Edward “Teddy” Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule travel to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island in Boston Harbor. The odd duo stretch themselves thin while investigating the seemingly implausible escape of a brilliant murderess Rachel Solando, incarcerated for drowning her three children. As the investigation deepens, Teddy realizes he will have to confront his own dark fears if he hopes to make it off the island alive. Watch Shutter Island on Netflix on February 1st.

The Unsettling (Season 1)

Also arriving on February 1st is the first season of The Unsettling. The story follows 16 year old Becca who is having a difficult time adjusting to her new foster home. The house is located in a remote area, her foster siblings are less than welcoming- especially the 11 year old biological son of their foster parents- and some seriously strange things begin to happen and Becca becomes uncertain about who or what is responsible. Or who to trust.

All My Friends Are Dead

Polish thriller All My Friends Are Dead makes it’s big debut on February 3rd. A group of friends at a New Year’s Eve party go through a whirlwind of gory events that exposes secrets, breaks hearts and leads to a shocking outcome.

Coming From Insanity

Arriving February 5th is Nigerian crime drama Coming From Insanity. Based on a true story, a 12 year old boy with genius-level intelligence, is one of many children trafficked through the Nigerian borders from Togo. He grows into a talented counterfeiter, making him rich; and a target.
